There is so much to share about sunscreens but I'll keep it general and describe two types of sunscreens: mineral and chemical.
Mineral SPF
Mineral sunscreen is also known as “physical SPF” and it only contains two ingredients: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These two ingredients work together and sit on top of the skin to physically block UVA and UVB rays. Mineral SPF also protects the second you apply it so no need to wait 20 minutes before going outside.
Chemical SPF
Generally, chemical sunscreens contain ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, and more. The ingredients disperse UV rays through the body and have the ability to enter your bloodstream irritating your skin. Especially after waxing, it will cause inflammation which can then lead to hyperpigmentation (sunspots).
Sunscreen tidbits
Last few things to be aware of when choosing a sunscreen. Be sure your sunscreen is:
- labeled broad-spectrum (blocks both UVA and UVB rays)
- labeled waterproof (for pool visiting purposes)
